Kukjae Instructors

All New Zealand kukjae hapkido federation clubs have at least one club instructor with more than 10 year's experience active in it - many have several. The profiles of each club instructor(s) are provided below.

From 4th dan the title of "Master" is used.

Lee Jung Nam, Grandmaster, 9th Dan black belt in both Taekwondo and Hapkido, and president of the New Zealand Taekwondo Federation Inc. A man who changed his life forever over 20 years ago by coming to New Zealand to establish and develop Taekwondo and Hapkido here.

Head Club Instructor of the Upper Hutt Kukjae Academy

Callum is the head instructor for the Upper Hutt Kukjae Hapkido Academy and next to Grandmaster Lee Jung Nam is the highest qualified Hapkido instructor in New Zealand. He started his Hapkido training under Grandmaster Lee in 1982 and he continues to receive personal tuition from him. Callum has also had a life long interest in swordsmanship, taking up fencing in 1979 before developing an interest in earlier European sword techniques.

Callum previously taught and ran the Wellington City and Lower Hutt Kukjae Hapkido clubs before setting up the Upper Hutt Kukjae Hapkido Academy in late 2004.

Callum is self employed and is a partner in one of New Zealand's leading financial planning practices.

Callum has lived in Upper Hutt since 1993 and is active in the Upper Hutt community through his involvement in both business and recreation. He is also the organiser of the biennial Harcourt Park international jousting tournament.

Malcolm Wright founded the Palmerston North club and is currently residing in Australia.


Bryce Burrows, 3rd Dan, Instructor

Brisbane Kukjae Hapkido

Bryce Burrows is the official kukjae hapkido representative in Brisbane, Australia. As well as being a 3rd Dan in Kukjae Hapkido Bryce has trained extensively in other martial arts including: Escrima, Karate (black belt), Brazillian Ju-Jitsu and Kickboxing. Bryce has undertaken martial arts training in the United Kingdom and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo), and Hapkido training in the UK, Austria (Vienna), U.S.A. (New York), and Australia (Sydney).


Dean Tobin, 3rd Dan, Instructor

Dean Tobin started studying Hapkido in or about 1985 under the Dunedin club's founders Nigel Keay and Miranda Adams. After a break of several years he returned to studying Hapkido fulltime in about 1990. He obtained his black belt in 1995.

Dean studied for and obtained his second dan in 1998, and third dan in 2001. Both gradings were completed with fellow Dunedin instructor Bryce Burrows.

Andy Montgomery has been instructing for over 10 years. He is a physical education officer for the NZ Police, as well as a rehabilitation and exercise consultant. Andy has trained in many martial arts but always comes back to hapkido.

Andy graded to 2nd dan in September 2004 and 3rd dan in December 2006.

Mark commenced training under Grand Master Lee in March 1984. He has cross trained with a variety of other martial arts but is of the opinion that Hapkido encompasses the general variety of the other styles. He has been instructing over 15 years. Other interests include indoor netball, chess, cartoon drawing. He is married with three sons.

Mark graded to 3rd dan in November 2007.


Dana Bidgood, 3rd Dan, Instructor

Having started martial arts as a child at the Lower Hutt Judo club, Dana started HKD in 1980 with wife Denise at the Willis St. dojang with Grand Master Lee.

Dana got his 1st Dan Black Belt in May 1985 and, along with Nigel Keay, became NZs first 2nd Dan Black Belt in May 1990 and went on to run the Wellington club in Kensington St. when Grand Master Lee was absent.

Dana is one of Grandmaster Lee's original New Zealand students.

Dana graded to 3rd dan in November 2007.

Currently ranked second Dan in hapkido, with 23+ years experience in hapkido (19 as a club instructor), Mark is one of Grandmaster Lee's original New Zealand students.

Aaron originally trained at the Parnell Kukjae Hapkido club started training in Hapkido in 1996. He graded to 1st dan in 2001.

Aaron graded to 2nd dan in September 2004.


Cowley Harris, 2nd Dan

Cowley Harris

Cowley Harris

Harris graded to 1st dan black belt in 2004 and 2nd dan in December 2006. He has trained in Kung fu and other Martial Arts and works as a security guard in the hospitality trade where he has found Hapkido very useful in avoiding harm to himself and others.

Cowley is currently overseas in Sweden.

He started his journey in Hapkido in 1980 under Grand Master Lee's instruction at the Dojang in Tory Street, Wellington, and gained his 1st Dan in 1985. Peter started the Wellington City club in 1997. Peter graded to 2nd dan in August 2007.

Peter Lewis, 2nd Dan

Peter Lewis is an instructor at the Palmerston North Kukjae Hapkido club. Peter graded to 2nd dan in March 2008.


Darryl Conchie, 2nd Dan

Darryl Conchie is a club Instructor at the Wellington City Kukjae Hapkido club. Darryl graded to 2nd dan in May 2008.

Robert Reynolds

Robert started his Hapkido training in 1999 and obtained his black belt in early 2006.

Robert has previously worked both as a security guard and as an ambulance officer.
